Corn cobs, hibiscus, red wine soaked charcoal, cocoa, cheesecloth & squid ink - 2024

This is likely one of the last (if not the last) corn piece of the season and luckily it turned out to be something pretty special. As per usual, I didn’t set out to create a celestial scene but the result suggests otherwise. I used quite a few of my tricks to achieve this result: soaked cheesecloth, spray bottles of diluted pigment, a random air duct (the semi-circle), etc.

But the coolest detail of all came in the most unexpected way: slugs. Their paths leading to and from the corn create motion in the piece I never would have considered on my own.

And it’s moments like this that help define my artwork as truly seasonal because these creatures wouldn’t have ventured onto any canvas during colder months.
